The Hyde Farm Vision: homes that don’t cost the earth to keep warm!

A festive event: Thursday the 1st of March
7pm Henry Cavendish School, food and drink available

Learn about our plans to take our energy and heating in our own hands: Solar PV, solar thermal, Combined Heat and Power, District Heating but also how to purchase energy together to beat the rising costs of energy

Experts from Carbon Descent will tell about all these technical options and our very inspiring friends from Brixton Energy will tell about how they have
created the first inner city community invested solar project, are we next?

Why are we doing this?
Victorian houses in a conservation area are lovely… but they are expensive to heat and a challenge to make energy efficient.

In recent years we have:
 shown people how to draughtproof their houses
 draughtbusted more than seventy Hyde Farm homes
 installed solar panels on Henry Cavendish school, and, and….

We want to do more to heat our homes sustainably and more economically, now and in the future.
Working together gives us more opportunities

Initiatives such as the Renewable Heating Initiative or Green Deal can help us achieve our goal … but only if we work together. Individually they cost too much but as a collective, they make financial sense and allow us to do things we never thought possible.

Join us as we set up Hyde Farm Energy!

We can purchase energy collectively and negotiate a far better deal.

We might even become our own micro energy company with our own
sources of clean and affordable heating and hot water!

The British Gas Green Streets programme is now well under way: 40 households have signed up and have surveys done. The small energy saving measures are being handed out, and the insulation programme has started. When relevant participants will get their lofts insulated, or even receive a boiler upgrade or solar thermal for hot water. All houses will be draughtbusted by our local tradesmen in the fashion that we have become famous for. Henry Cavendish School will have free energy from the new photovoltaic panels soon!

December 2009: we are a successful participant in Green Streets II in co-operation with British Gas to provide homes in Hyde Farm with insulation or renewable energy, as well as renewable energy generation for Henry Cavendish School.  A welcome boost for all our efforts and a good opportunity to help the community lower our carbon emissions and energy bills. Santa Claus has been to Hyde Farm in Balham which means that you could get your home insulated or, if you've already done that, you could even qualify for a boiler upgrade or solar thermal water heating.

October 2009: We reached the London Regional Final with our bid to British Gas Green Streets II and are awaiting to hear whether we will receive any funding for household energy efficiency and micro-generation projects in our local community.

March 2009: We have been awarded a grant of £500 for equipment to support the development of our Community Garden in Radbourne Road Our Activities

February 2009: Successful draught-busting session rounds off a winter season of events which has seen growing numbers of local residents learn how to draught-proof their own homes.

November 2008: Hyde Farm CAN becomes formally constitued as a neighbourhood group; first ever AGM sees constitution adpoted and committee elected.

October 2008: Hyde Farm CAN initiates and hosts the South London Low Carbon Communities Conference.

Hyde Farm Climate Action Network is a network of residents who live on or near the Hyde Farm estate in London SW12, who want to reduce their impact on the environment.  The objectives of the non party-political Group are:

To work together to find ways to reduce our carbon emissions in our homes, with our food and consumer choices and when we travel

To find ways of working together that are practical, fun and effective

To share our interests and resources to achieve more together

To use the network as an opportunity to develop a greater sense of community recognising that being part of a strong community can help reduce our carbon emissions further

To inspire and support other communities to achieve similar aims
