Our activities so far have included:
Open Evening June 2008
It was an evening to remember, with food and drink from Trinity Stores and lots of interesting people and stalls, including the Energy Saving Trust, Green Homes Concierge Service, a local contractor specialising in draught-proofing and sash window restoration, plumbing and electrical contractors,
a solar supplier, WRAP recycling advisor, Women's Environmental Network Carbon Counters, Food Up Front, local crafts from recycled materials, and much more. It was attended by over 200 people and many are keen to get involved with our activities and living a lower carbon lifestyle.
ECHO Action
We have 20-25 households participating in a year-long scheme to reduce their CO2 emissions by 10-20%. This project, called ECHO Action has funding from the European Union.
We are also a Low Carbon Community with access to some consultancy and modest funding from the Energy Saving Trust Advice Centre for London
Food up Front
We have also joined forces with Food Up Front which is encouraging people to grow vegetables in their front garden - even a pot of salad leaves can replace a bag or two of salad from the supermarket each week, saving several kilograms of CO2 over time (we'll do a precise calculation one day!).
Transition Towns
We are inspired by the ideas and activities of the Transition Towns movement and have informal links with our nearby Transition Town Brixton
Big Green Challenge
We were delighted to learn in April 2008 that our initial proposal has been successfully short-listed for the final 100 of the Big Green Challenge. We are currently working on a more detailed proposal and welcome more people to get involved with this activity. Get Involved!
We are looking into starting a local currency and would be very interested to hear from anyone with expertise or ideas or who would like to join our working party.
There are lots of other events underway such as film showings, “draught-busting” days and visits to eco-buildings.
We also hold informal planning meetings and working parties. Most importantly we have got a debate going at a local level - and established a support network. We can help one another!
